Review of RAU 2025

We asked participants to share their thoughts after the 2025 residential singing weekend at the Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester. Here is a summary of their feedback.

Praise for this year’s director was unanimous. Participants described him as an outstanding musician who struck an excellent balance between serious musical work and an entertaining, encouraging atmosphere. He was credited with genuinely improving the choir’s singing over the course of the weekend, fostering a sense of ensemble rather than just a collection of individuals. His deep expertise in early music came through clearly, and his infectious enthusiasm for the programme’s theme won people over completely. Several participants noted they learned a great deal and felt inspired throughout.

The themed programme — centred on sacred and early music — was warmly received, with participants enjoying the mix of unfamiliar repertoire alongside more familiar pieces. A few noted they would welcome a broader mix of periods and secular music on future occasions, and it was noted that the director is equally well-versed in music from other eras, should the group wish to explore that in future.

The RAU was felt to be a very good setting for the weekend. Singing in the chapel was a particular highlight, widely preferred to the alternative rehearsal space. The staff were praised for being friendly, efficient, and attentive. Bedrooms were considered adequate and clean, with a couple of minor notes about room size and condition.

Meals were generally well received and appreciated. Suggestions for improvement included warming plates, ensuring vegetarian options contain sufficient protein, and making fresh fruit available throughout (rather than only on request).

The smooth running of the weekend drew repeated thanks. Several participants noted a marked improvement on the previous year, with last year’s teething troubles clearly having been addressed. Six newcomers attended this year, including a Younger Singer Bursary recipient, and the welcoming atmosphere was frequently mentioned.

The overwhelming feeling was one of enjoyment, gratitude, and enthusiasm for returning. As one participant put it: “The place, the facilities, the food, the atmosphere, the companionship, the music, the directing were all delightful.”
